Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square is a is a nightly arts festival at Mallory Square Dock in Key West, Florida. Every evening before sunset, a celebration takes place at Mallory Square. It captured the attention of literary geniuses like Mark Twain and Tennessee Williams.

The Key West Sunset Celebration invites everyone to participate. Watch the glowing pink and red sun sink into the Gulf of Mexico horizon. Among the performers are famed guitarist and vocalist, Mustafa, Dale the Sword Swallower and Dominique the Cat Man, featuring his tightrope-walking cats.

It is a combination of friends and talents that has enchanted tourists and locals alike. The nightly party has the beauty, history, and passion that has been immortalized in art, literature, poetry, and photography.

Join the crowds of people that congregate at the water’s edge to experience a multicultural happening and to watch the sun sink into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ernest Hemingway House

The Ernest Hemingway House, known today as the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, was the residence of author Ernest Hemingway in Key West, Florida. The house is at 907 Whitehead Street, across from the Key West lighthouse, close to the Southern coast of the island. It was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1968.

The Hemingway home is a Spanish Colonial structure built in 1851 and it was constructed of native rock hewn from the grounds. The home was in shambles but both Hemingway and his wife could see past that, appreciating the grand architecture of the home. In the early 1930s, the restoration of the home turned it into the National Historical Landmark that is visited by thousands of tourists today.

Hemingway lived in this house from 1931 to 1939 and today it is a private, for-profit landmark and attraction. It is famously populated by  polydactyl cats, that are descendants of Hemingway’s original cats.

Literary Works

It is believed that Hemingway did some of his best work in this house. Namely, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.” Additionally, the novel “To Have And Have Not,” and non-fiction “Green Hills of Africa” were also written there.

When Hemingway and Pauline divorced in 1940, he took up residence in Cuba. He continued to visit Key West during until his death in 1961. Throughout the years, Key West has been home to many writers and artists. However, none has had a presence and influence as profound as Ernest Hemingway.

Key West Lighthouse

The Key West Lighthouse opened in 1848 with a woman as its Keeper. This is something that was unheard of during the 19th century. In the following years, the Lighthouse underwent a number of upgrades including the installation of a Third Order Fresnel Lens, an extension to the tower which allowed the light to be seen from a farther away, the Keeper’s Quarters was added, and lastly the electrification of the light.

In 1969, the U.S. Coast Guard decommissioned the Key West Lighthouse. The reason for this was that a full-time Keeper was no longer a needed due to the changing technology. Today, this watch tower of the sea stands as a museum dedicated to Key West’s maritime heritage and to the brave folks who kept the light burning through the war and treacherous weather.

Today, visitors can walk up the 88 steps to the top of the light as well as explore the belongings, photographs, and words of the lighthouse Keepers and their families.

The Key West Lighthouse is within walking distance to the Ernest Hemingway House.

Floating Sea Cove Resort is in the city of Marathon in the Florida Keys. It is in an environmental reserve and it offers bungalows on land and floating rooms on docked houseboats. A fishing pier, boat ramp, and boat docks are also provided. Additionally, free parking is available. Curry Hammock State Park is just a mile away.
